Key Highlights of the ISL Recognition Project

Data Collection and Preprocessing

Utilized datasets like INCLUDE50 (900 videos, 50 words), INCLUDE100 (1,695 videos, 100 words), WL-ASL, and MS-ASL500. Preprocessing involved extracting 3D landmarks (hand, lip) and converting them into feature vectors for model training.

Shuwa Model Approach

Explored the SHUWA model using MediaPipe and K-NN for gesture recognition. Achieved 95% training accuracy on INCLUDE50 but was abandoned due to severe overfitting (3-4% testing accuracy).

Transformer Model for ISL

Developed a transformer-based model with positional encodings and self-attention mechanisms. Achieved 75% testing accuracy on INCLUDE50 and optimized INCLUDE100 accuracy from 59% to 75% through hyperparameter tuning.

Continuous Sign Language Recognition (CSLR)

Focused on recognizing dynamic ISL sequences for fluent signers. Leveraged models like RNNs, LSTMs, and transformers for real-time, low-latency recognition. Research and performance evaluation are ongoing.

Bidirectional LSTM with Attention

Tested for sequence learning but achieved limited success with accuracies of 23-25% (50 words) and 14-15% (100 words), falling short compared to transformers.

Model Optimization and Challenges

Addressed overfitting, hardware limitations, and real-time adaptability. Efforts include hyperparameter tuning, data adjustments, and architecture refinement to improve accuracy and scalability.
